every discussion of how you use your vote, being compelled to vote, voting for "the lesser of two evils" is a worthwhile conversation to have. but all of it exists underneath a larger question, one to which the answer seems obvious to me.

some groundwork, first:

  • are there people who would very much like to vote but can't? yes. would those people go through months if not years of their lives to get the right to vote, or get it back? yes.

  • do i have friends who can't vote? yes. if i could choose to, would i cast a vote for a friend who otherwise is unable to? absolutely.

so i cannot just ignore the privilege i have to put another vote out there, for the people who cannot. for every queer person thinking "my vote doesn't matter, its just one guy who hates me versus one who can't stand me", there's another queer person in prison. their life is already terrible, how can i sit here and tell them "life sucks no matter who is in charge?"

if you can't bring yourself to vote, bring someone else's memory. do it as you think of the person who would be voting if they could.
