This picture is a few days old now but BEHOLD! My current pride and joy: My planter box filled with lettuce!
"But, Wolfie, it's just lettuce, what's so special about that?" I hear you ask.
Well, gentle Cohoster, allow me to explain:
Back in Gimmelshtump in the days of my youth, Way way back when I was a teen, maybe pre-teens, I really started getting into the idea of growing my own fruit and veggies. My grandad had always done so - still does - and I never paid much attention beyond, you know, free samples of strawberries every now and then, but around that time it kinda clicked: Hey, isn't growing your own fruit and veg fun? You can pick as much as you want when you need it, it's tons cheaper than having to constantly buy from the supermarket, and you have guaranteed freshness! Ever since I have dreamed about owning my own gardening bed full of veggies, herbs, fruit etc. just like a fancy tv chef!
There was just one issue. The garden is very much my dad's domain. And he doesn't like growing fruit a veggies, he's strictly a flower person. Because of this, pretty much any hint hints towards having my own planter box was pretty much noped out of. At most he would allow a couple hanging baskets of strawberries and tomatoes that would only last for the season and then be discarded but anything permanent? NOPE!
That is until a month ago when one day, all of a sudden, mum and dad bought me this garden planter, all because apparently my grandad decided to give them lettuce seeds for no random reason? I'm not sure how conversations led to this arrangement, I wasn't there as I was spending the day with a friend, but however they came about led to one very ecstatic Wolfsoul who almost cried happy tears right on the spot. Finally after years of wanting a garden planter to grow my own food in, I finally got one! And I was going to be allowed to keep it and keep growing things out of it for as long as the planter stayed sturdy!
So, you see, this is not just a picture of lettuce, it's a picture of dream finally coming to fruition for me. Everyday since planting the lettuce it has become a daily source of joy to go out and check on them, water them, watch the tiny few leaves here and there turn into massive salad leaves that spread and grow and fill out the planter! This picture here was the 'Final result', I suppose you could say, as we started harvesting the first of many crops for our dinner soon afterwards and sowed some more seeds in it's place (It tasted pretty good and there's still loads left so we're having BLTs this weekend!). I have already started growing tomatoes alongside the lettuce though it seems to be a slower process, and now there's even talks of growing carrots in the winter AND buying a pop-up greenhouse so that I can grow even more things! This is honestly the start of whole big gardening adventure for me and I can't wait to continue following this childhood dream and seeing what else I manage to successfully grow in my mini kitchen garden! X3
