The Lord Protector leaned against the marble railing of the balcony that adorned the rear of her suites in the Imperial Palace. Crimson curtains billowed in the sea breeze coming in off the bay. She had seen her duty through. Ascious Largonai had made it to their age of majority.

In her hand she held a working glass half full of a mountain vintage from her home town of Send. The smouldering cigarette between her fingers sent smoke spiralling upwards. Would she still need to smoke those, her duty now seen through? The Young Emperor was no longer her ward.

With their ascension to the Senate, she could simply be Marshall as before. The trappings of state returned fully to the Largonai family again. With the marriage of Ascious to Keiko of neighbouring Aquateria the breach between the nations would be sealed. With luck, an heir would come.

She turned, her dress whites with that shoulder cape of her station felt heavier than normal. She could hear the celebration below. The grand ball thrown for the now whole Senatus. Her crowning accomplishment over the past ten years. A Marshall who sought peace, holding war mongers at bay.

A young Emperor reared to their station, and allowed their youthful adventures. Of course she'd known about 'Ace's' forays into the city. Of hanging out with that young gangster. They'd been followed everywhere, each time they snuck out. Her head dipped forward in reflection.

What would she have truly said if they'd tried to abdicate. To become Nemo? A nobody. Would she have stopped them? It would have been her duty. Her heart knew the answer, and it terrified her. She may have let the whole house of cards fall down for her ward's happiness.

She thanked every feather on the Phoenix' head that she'd never faced that cruel test. External threats to the state had been plentiful, to say nothing of the power hungry within the organs of governance. To have to fight down her own heart? That challenge she may have lost.

It no longer mattered. Her task was seen through. Perhaps she could take the time to visit home. She'd not been in so long. Perhaps even find time for her own life once again. When had she last gone on a date? Was forty four beyond the age of finding love and a wife?

Her eye turned to the stars beyond the fireworks exploding in the sky. "You old fool, it's never too late to find love." She cast her wine to the sea, and turned with the clack of bootheels to the red marble floor. Her steps carried her through her chambers, back to the party.
