The depth gauge read 269 meters down. A little voice in Stacey's head sounded out the word 'niiiiiiice' as she read that. The forward lights illuminated the view out the transparent steel canopy of her DSRV. It was an older model 'Striped Dolphin'. One of the Stripey's as they were referred too. Not just because of the species they were named after, but the vehicle itself had a pair of trailing comms beacons that fluttered like stripes in the vehicles wake. Inflatable buoys in their ends allowed them to be deployed to radio depth as markers. The buoy would fill up to reach neutral buoyancy at the minimum plausible comms depth.
The mecha danced like a graceful sea creature under the operators sure controls. Its massive bulk was absolutely no hinderance in the water. Where it was lumbering and slow on the deck of its home carrier, down here, it would put a manta ray to shame with how it moved its size. Ahhh! There was the sunken research vessel. Stacey grimaced with what greeted her eyes. The giant rip in the hull, from bow to stern on starboard. It looked to have been done by claws. Still, if there was a chance of even a single survivor in the carcass laying on the bottom.
She deployed a comms beacon from off her mechs back and waited for the ping of comms going live. All the while she navigated closer. There wasn't a chance to float the vessel. Her toes wiggled against the control pedals. This was going to get very tricky very fast...
