daily knowledge: in the early years of twitter, chris messina (a man who never worked for twitter but still invented the hashtag) ran a twitter fan wiki.
it was a community maintained resource compiling information about twitter and the many 3rd party tools that used twitter's api. it is these 3rd party tools that brought the hashtag to relevance prior to twitter implementing it officially, and a relic of that is this wiki describing them as a "community-driven convention." the wiki still exists today, though it hasn't been edited in... forever.
