first, everyone who was paying attention knew back in 2021 that this deal was a dogshit idea. like absolutely nobody was on board aside from the people who thought/for some fucking reason still think that unity could do no wrong. everyone looked at this and went "what the actual fuck is this even for" with some of the biggest fucking clowns you've ever met going "this is going to change the engine forever, hollywood here we come!"

of course, the actual reason was that unity was trying to chase epic, who had basically at that point cemented their place in film and tv production. unity spends a fucking lot of time trying to chase epic and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the driving force behind basically every choice they made with hdrp and the whole mess that thing became. one of these days I will properly complain about hdrp because I think it is the pure embodiment of everything wrong with unity's srp setup

like at least with speedtree you could kinda get it though. speedtree is a middleware that actually lines up with markets that actually fucking use unity even if it is a massive piece of shit that poorly integrates with unity's tooling to the point where basically any vegetation system you get off the asset store will not just be cheaper but likely better. hell, they'll definitely be more robust

and so this feels a lot like unity trying to win people back by going "look, look! we're cutting off the stuff that makes no fucking sense to basically anyone at all!" but their idea of doing that is laying off more than 250 people less than a fucking month before christmas their 6th series of layoffs in less than two fucking years! and yeah, some of these people will get rehired by weta fx, the company that exists and actually has a point, but some definitely won't, which makes this whole thing even more fucked up

not only did nobody actually benefit from this whole debacle but a bunch of people are going to be meaningfully worse off because of it in what is also one of the most poorly timed layoffs as far as optics are concerned. just absolute clown shit
