cohost being more or less designed from the ground up to prevent sitewide conversation has really only resulted in a situation where, instead of a dialogue forming, you have 400 thousand people all individually vagueposting about snippets they've seen or heard from Other vagueposts, telephone gaming the situation until the only thing most people are aware of is "gee, everyone sure is mad around here", and i have to explain and re-explain and re-re-explain the whole thing from first principles to every single person who walks in like Hey Guys What's Happening In This Thread.

which - and i mean no offense to the few of you who've actually been cordial and receptive - is the sort of thing that can and will drive you Completely Fucking Nuts

and, of course, the ball's in our court on this one right. we Have to explain ourselves again, and again, and again, because the line that's been run through the vaguepost factory is "we said mean words", and so we're inherently on the back foot. if you Don't explain yourself, well, of course what everyone's saying must be true.

you're placed in an unwinnable position: either keep engaging to try and prevent yet another voice joining the chorus against you, or ignore it and be subjected to your dashboard slowly filling up with posts about how terrible you are for having done The Bad Thing. and god forbid you lash out a second time, because then you just kick off another entire tidal wave of bullshit. its not fun!

But is this meaningfully worse than anywhere else? I mean, certainly in this type of situation on say, Twitter- There isn't really much of a "dialogue" forming either. People might be slightly more informed about the nature of whatever is being argued about, but they still usually fail to grasp the whole picture and wind up latching onto a convenient narrative, regardless of the nuances.

I agree this type of thing is frustrating but maybe web design can only go so far in making a "conversation" between 400,000 people any type of useful
