I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT, I don't know if that was the inspiration for this piece but it made me think of the portugese man o' war. But anyway, this is a very cool visual, I love the color contrast here!
The inspiration for the piece is way less tied to a specific thing like that. When I did my painting degree, I primarily worked in a semi-abstract visual language, and a lot of that was based on feel and and what movements felt satisfying to do with a brush, and then organized by what actually looked good compositionally. This is more or less following those same principles.
I often show bodies fraying into abstraction whenever I'm rendering "magic" because I'm interested in what happens to a mind when when you turn into energy like that, and I think I can probably trace that directly to The Riddlemaster of Hed books, which explicitly use the term "fraying" for when a body uses magic to become something else like, for example, the wind.
