When I was in high school I realized this. At one point I was in the special education room (I have autism, for context) and they had that quote written on the wall. And based on the attitude of the teachers, it was clear to me the lesson they intended. "Your effort doesn't matter, only the results." We took the quote and read it through an american lens. Its exactly the way a boss, manager, or other authority would look at it. Its very controlling. But I think its a certifiable misquote. It's the same words, but Yoda meant something different. The human perspective is so outwards sometimes, but really what Yoda was saying was not the results, but the position of the heart. "Doing" was not about the result, but Living in trying. To do is to try again. its not the result that matters, but the effort you put out, and the strength you have in your heart to try again.
The truth is, everyone wants to do something with themselves. To apply and gain skill. its about encouraging them in that, and I believe the original quote author understood this. I wanted so bad to explain how it was misquoted and we were doing it a terrible disservice and using it to discourage people but of course, no teacher would take a lesson from an autistic teen.
