@Codarobo

it's really shaping up! I'm pretty much done with the 'classic suika game' part of this

you can try it if you want (currently desktop browsers only!) https://codarobo.itch.io/cafepop (password: suika)

oh and the working title of this for now is "cafe pop" or "cafepop"

Codarobo
@Codarobo

It's currently only for Windows and Mac - was having trouble getting the web exported version to work 100%. The web version remains as the original version that I uploaded a few weeks ago.

(scroll down to the downloads to find the mac and windows versions of v0.2!)

A non-exhaustive list of additions:

  • More music!
  • Fully-fledged cafe gameplay!
  • Fulfill customer orders! Orders that are ready to go out are highlighted in red; click on them to fulfill the order and remove those items from the bakery case.
  • Lives system - overfilling the case or taking too long to fulfill an order will result in losing a 'life'. When you lose all 3, the game is fully over.
  • Customers show an emoji status to indicate how impatient they're getting
  • Money!
  • Beware Hana!

@Codarobo
  • New UI!
  • The list of customers now scrolls
  • Fullscreen toggle in options!
  • New freezer feature! Can be purchased and used to store a dessert until someone buys it, removing it from the case
  • Difficulty levels for Cafe Mode
  • Classic Suika Mode is back
  • Gameplay balance changes
  • Help screen for determining order of merging
  • Notifications/toasts indicating when customers arrive, are checked out, leave in frustration, etc.
  • Spilling out of the case causes a full game over once more
  • Various fixes and tweaks
  • The game scales/fullscreens much more nicely now without blurry text/images!
  • Monetary values for orders are now 1/4 of what they were before (which makes a lot more sense for USD)
  • Much bigger name list
  • Hana

Look for the v0.25 downloads for Mac and Windows!

(I'm hoping to get the itch.io page for this tidied up and styled and stuff this week, and will be doing another release most likely to make this public and add high scores!)

I figured that would be likely, so didn't wanna presume you didn't know about things that still need work!
I think the main thing I've noticed is that the desserts can be very bouncy when they hit other fruit, but it also seems to vary a bit? Possibly the smaller ones are more bouncy than the others but it seems to vary depending on what size of dessert they're hitting, which makes placing desserts a bit more unpredictable than maybe they should be?

Two minor things:

  1. I got to a very large dessert size only for the picture to be blank (Not sure what type of dessert it was supposed to be, and can't remember the previous colour/size sorry)
  2. When moving the mouse around, the dessert only appears when the mouse is contained in the back wall of the box, which makes it quite difficult to place desserts at the edges of the box.

Really enjoying it tho, love the music and ambient sounds, combines well with the cafe art and makes it all really chill

  1. That’s impressive, you got past the unique types of desserts I programmed, lol. I think in the final game the biggest size will just disappear or not combine or something, i think that’s gonna be the size limit..
  2. That’s intentional to try to avoid having desserts dropping onto the sides of the case, but there’s probably a more elegant way to implement that for sure!

This is really cute, I like the unique spin on the formula! Plucking out desserts for a customer and getting a combo in the chaos is fun, maybe there should be a point reward for that somehow?

A couple of other little bits of feedback:

  1. The play area's clickable zone is a bit narrower than the graphic suggests, it'd be nice if the horizontal mouse position were clamped to the acceptable values, but you could still click a little bit outside; I'd suggest maybe roughly the distance to the right side of the viewport on both sides.
  2. I think the farthest left/right positions for the desserts is not adjusted per dessert, so on the larger ones it's possible to deflect off the top lip of the container. Not sure if this is intentional, and I don't think I've managed to do much other than deflect a few pixels over, but it's a slightly unexpected effect to me.
  3. I seem to very rarely get a named customer?
  4. Freezer concept seems neat, but I don't think there's enough space/time pressure in the current version to really rely on it.

Oooh, if you don't see customer names this might be a macos filesystem thing! I haven't tested the latest mac export and recently moved to loading in a list of names from an external file and am currently developing on my windows machine (gasp). I'll be sure to go check that out.

Also, combos have been on my mind for awhile, it's just a bit hard to think through how to identify what a combo is in a game that combines turn-based gameplay and physics. I would love to get there with it though.

OH! I think I know what's up! It's expecting the names file to be co-located in the directory! I haven't had the spoons to jump back into my editor and check it out yet but i bet that's what it is
