A broad headed sharpshooter (Oncometopia orbona) visited me a little while ago as I sat under a tree on my morning break. The wedge shaped head and wide set eyes are interesting.
They’re in the leaf hopper family Cicadellidae, which is pretty noticeable in the general arrangement of the head parts and the mouth parts.
They’re called sharpshooters cause they shoot tiny jets of sugar water away as they drink the nutrient poor juice in their host plants. They need to drink a lot to get the nutrients they need so they do this frequently.
