they've been doing this since 2010, it's because they don't like paying maintenance costs from people using them in the way they used the public space that was there before malls were all that's left.

it's so funny too, because foot traffic is the only way malls make sense monetarily, otherwise it's just 4 big box stores that smell like pretzels and antiseptic

It checks out. When I compare today to the 1980s, the only two changes are TikTok and the fact that unruly teens no longer unrulily sweep the mall floors and wash the display windows on their outings...

More seriously, I point to the historical records The Blues Brothers and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, both of which had mall scenes that resonated with audiences. But sure, TikTok.
