In writing that last chist about the fuitilty of awards shows. I thought about hiw movies show award culture spawned an entire genre of movies made just to get the oscar for that year. I think it would be crazy if videogames had that same issue.

It's not exactly common now, but it does feel like there are a few oscarbait games. The Last of Us stands out as having huge oscarbait energy, but i also think Final Fantasy 16 may be a bit of and oscarbait game also.

It's not like the Keighleys have a backroom of game wizards you could make a game just to pander too, but i feel like GOTYbait may be a thing already, but probably just works a little differently.

the way to make the gaming equivalent of oscarbait is to have sony interactive entertainment spend millions of dollars to publish your game

I think I fully undestand what you mean by it being crazy - it takes an absurd amount of time to develop videogames - but I also feel this immensely. Looking at the TGA lists and almost all of them stand out on this way of feeling "off".

Aside from the usual titles being mostly AAA fare, IMO the "Oscarbait" flavor of gaming would be something like "Trying to evoke a feeling of [it], without actually being [it]". That fits for these larger 'prestige' games, like TloU, God of War, RDR2, FFXIV ("Its just like a movie/TV series!") but also would apply to, for example, Sea of Stars ("Its just like your classic jRPGs")

This is a really good comparison. normal oscarbait tries to pander by reminding the judges of an era they miss, like old hollywood or the prestige pictures of their day. AAA games sorta do that by trying to seem like a movie, but Sea of Stars is the perfect example of a video game version of oscarbait and how it works. It's more tailored to evoke those nostalgic feelings for old games past more than anything else.
