God it is so hard, on the first time ordering something, to know what you're getting sometimes. Just ordered some delicious breakfast for dinner from a local pizza place. I've never actually had their pizza as far as I can recall, and have only ever gotten breakfast foods from them. Anyway, Char wanted pancakes. A side order of just pancakes is 2 for 5 bucks or 3 for 6. Surely they must be reasonable pancakes for that price, and an extra is just an additional dollar. So, 3 it is. These pancakes end up being dinner plate sized. Thick as hell. The takeout container is HEAVY.
I order a breakfast sandwich, as is my proclivity. Bacon, egg, and American cheese on a kaiser, with fried onions. 8 bucks. Which feels a bit pricey, especially because just a few years ago it was a fiver. But that's the way of the world. Plus it's an amazing breakfast sandwich. And a mediocre chain restaurant burger'll set you back even more. But I digress. We both want home fries. A single hashed brown, like, McD's style, is 3 on their menu, so home fries being 4 and some change? Surely it's not a lot. So I get us each one. Add cheddar and fried onions. Mistake. Each one is as heavy as a brick. Three servings at least. How was I to know, honestly?
A similar establishment nearby offers an order of broccoli bites, and for 6 bucks you get 5. That's over a buck a bite. And odd numbered too, annoying to split halfwise, let alone threesies. Can't very well call these places up and be like "Am I going to get raked over the coals by inflation by ordering your breakfast potatoes, or are you a shining beacon in the darkness and I'm going to be buried in a starchy tomb of my own undoing?"
Like, it's not a bad problem to have by any means. I'd rather be in the thick of it with three servings of potato for a crisp Lincoln rather than cutting a broccoli bite in half like a Dickensian youth at a Bennigan's. Also getting multiple meals out of a delivery order makes me feel a little less guilty about spending.
Anyway, it just goes to show you.
