my one regret about gamedev is that it isn't really one of those careers where you can have like a cool defining personality trait that influences your technique. like you can't be like "i'm on a quest to find revenge for my family which is why i use freya holmer's iterated lerp fix"

I think I actually get to have this though as an accessibility design specialist. I got decently known for playing games one handed because of my disability. Starting from that exposure I learned a lot about accessibility needs in games as a whole. Now I apply that knowledge to a wide variety of design problems to create inclusion and undo a wrong most devs aren't aware of.

Not as epic as a revenge quest but I think it counts.

How does that work, on a mechanical level? I can see how it works fairly easily with turn-based games or realtime ones where you can make inputs while paused, there you just go slow

Something like a (less complex) racing game too, where your only inputs are steering, accelerator and brake. But what about say your typical FPS or action-adventure, where you at least need simultaneous access to independent movement and aiming controls, in addition to attack and a few other action (reload, grenade, jump, dodge, etc) buttons?

Or is that just a "not everything can be for everyone" situation?

Technique varies among people that play games one handed. In my case it's my left hand doing the controls. I lay my palm on the left control stick below the pinky and ring finger, my thumb moves the right stick and presses face buttons, and the remaining fingers press the shoulder buttons and triggers. The d-pad is the only input I have to momentarily adjust my grip for, and even then I can often press it with the base of the thumb joint.

You can see this in action with my GDQ speedruns, most of which have a handcam and are often pretty complex and intense action games: https://gdqvods.com/runner/halfcoordinated
