yesterday was Cygames Cup 2023, a JP tournament for GBVS (the original). before grand finals they showed a teaser trailer for Anila who'll be in Rising when it launches! they didn't show any game footage of her except for what looks like her match intro. there'll be another trailer on March 4. trailer and more info below!

Slide showing Anila's portrait art in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, as well as her voice actresses and a brief description of her playstyle: "An all-rounder who fights using a pole-arm and divine sheep. With a variety of projectiles, anti-airs, and rush-down attacks, the Queen of Sheep has a powerful set of tools that can be utilized by players of all skill levels."

the prize for winning the tournament was 1 million yen. before the grand finals matches started, they showed a slide that said what each player would spend their 1 million yen on.

Pre-match screen from Grand Finals of Cygames Cup Special 2023, showing each player's character and name, as well as what they'd spend their 1 million yen prize on if they won. Tororo, the Percival player, says that he will spend his prize on paying back people who've been taking care of him, a new PC, traveling overseas, and eating lots of delicious food. gamera, the Djeeta player, says "Zoo".

Tororo: "Paying back those who've been taking care of me, a new PC, traveling overseas, eating lots of delicious food"

gamera: "Zoo"

after that, Tororo beat gamera with a quick 3-0 in grand finals, getting revenge for EVO 2022.

they revealed a few more details about Rising:

Slide showing Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising's design concept. "The core GBVS gameplay experience will remain the same- the new characters and mechanics will serve to elevate moment to moment options and strategies to new levels! We are still as determined as ever to deliver our vision of a fighting game that can be thoroughly enjoyed by both newcomers and veterans!" first, they showed their design philosophy for the game- adding new characters and mechanics without losing the GBVS feel.

Slide showing a new Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising mechanic, Dash Attacks. "A quick attack that can be performed while dashing- close the gap and keep the pressure on with different variations using light, medium, and heavy attacks. Some characters have dash attacks that can be chained into combos or used to catch blocking foes off guard!". 3 pictures of Gran demonstrate the 3 dash attacks. "L- quickly apply pressure while moving forward. M- For Gran is a low hitting poke that can be used to catch standing foes off-guard. H- has the slowest start-up and recovery, but can be chained into a combo for big damage!" dash attacks. they didn't talk too much about them, but every character will have 3 dash attacks available to them. it seems like the specifics will mostly be dependent on character.

Slide showing new enders for the auto combo triple attack in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising. "Just like the original Auto Combo system from GBVS, Triple Attacks can be performed by pushing an attack button three times in a row. The third hit, however, can now be changed to an overhead or low attack depending on your input. Use them to open up a defensive foe and keep your pressure going!" new auto combo finishers. all characters can go into either a low or an overhead at the end of their combo. this seems really nice, giving people an easy way to vary their pressure is great.

there's some small clips of the two new mechanics being used by a couple characters on the official GBVSR site. they reminded everyone about the GBVSR beta tournament happening at EVO this year and said that people who aren't going to EVO will get another chance to try the game further down the line.

really excited to see what the other new system mechanics are and for the game in general. we'll probably see what anila actually does in-game next week!

great writeup! I was super exhausted so I had to crash before the stream was anywhere near done. today I saw the updated image about other chances to play pre-release, but I didn't catch the stream itself... did they really say that it'll be... after evo? this is not helping me feel confident about the whole "2023" thing. I hate being negative about this all the time, but even after january seemed like everything was going better, I can't believe anila's announcement came with... an announcement of a trailer. and not just, y'know, a trailer.

but hey, the good thing: anila is adorable! good choice! looking forward to seeing more. just kinda wish any of it, any of it at all, could go a lil faster.
