i havent made a post about this in a while but if anyone has any advice for an unskilled laborer (has only done food work and low level data entry jobs) to get a remote job, i'm very scared of catching covid at my stupid restaurant job where no one but me masks and would like to get out of it ASAP. it seems like the job market is just kinda Bad right now but doesn't hurt to ask again

Lying always helps. Even if you don't go as far as saying you were the marketing ombudsmen at microsoft, embellishing your skills and using corpo speak always can give you a few extra points.

Another good bit of advice I heard was to look at the job listing and use some of the same vocab it uses, so that way the AI weeder it uses in the first round will keep your resume in the running

if you have friends online or in your community, it always helps to see if they know of any opportunities

i've gotten both of my remote jobs from networking so far

other than that, embellish any skills you have from your other jobs that might apply to a remote one. are you good with deadlines? are you detail-oriented? a good communicator and team player? most remote jobs care more about these "soft skills" and will train you on what you'll be doing anyway

if you have access to a resource that will help you polish up your resume, write a cover letter, and work on interviewing skills, that'll go a long way. often, community colleges and similar orgs will have this. if you're disabled and in the US, consider looking into "vocational rehab"

last but not least,,, apply for everything you can, regardless of if you think you're qualified or not. you don't have to be the best and the job isn't expecting you to be. in fact, many of the items on their job postings are more of a "wish list" than a hard and fast set of prerequisites. apply anyway, and see where it takes you

best of luck, my friend <3

i appreciate the writeup!

i've been asking around to my communities but nobody really has anything. lots of hiring freezes it seems.

i think i'm pretty good at embellishing my skillsets and have been trying to laser target the remote stuff i'm looking at by adjusting my resumé and cover letters to sound good for those jobs (mostly aiming for customer service because i don't have other remote job skills). i've been told that my stuff looks good, but i barely get any responses. i'm also applying for some stuff i don't technically qualify for, but it's mostly stuff like "saying i have X number of years in the field".

maybe just a very long string of bad luck
