I’ve started planning the next October Video Game Horror Fan Arts series. This will be my fourth year, and I wanted to try something different. The first two years were a grab bag of horror game characters or just spooky characters from non-horror games. The third year was focused on indie and obscure titles.

I’ve covered A LOT of ground with those 93 illustrations (31 each year). So for Year Four, I want a new approach. I want to draw fan art for fake horror games. Like Petscop, the Lacey Flash games, Vermis; stuff like that. Creepypastas, if you will. I need 31 of these things, with enough visual information to draw fan art.

If you know of any fake horror games that could be fun for this, please let me know. I’ll take creepypastas, fake games made for movies, cancelled games, whatever. As long as it’s not an actual game.

Throwing this out there again because y’all have helped me out a lot in getting good fake horror game suggestions.
And I made the cover for this year’s batch.
And I really like how it turned out.

I watched Stay Alive (2006) for this project, so you know I’m committed.

It’s a shame I won’t be able to share this one on cohost. So I’m asking for this one last thing from my cohost buds. If you know some good fake horror games (creepypastas, cool youtube projects, failed game projects, fake games in movies, games, anime, and the like), I’d like to hear them!

Those are perfect! I’m good with gothic horror and just spooky vibe fake games. It’s good to have a mix of dark and lighthearted picks when you’re doing a month-long drawing challenge. Gives you variety.

Game within a game counts, I think. It’s kinda weird because it is technically a playable game, but it doesn’t exist outside of a real game’s world. And to fill up a whole month of drawings, I think I’ll need stuff like this and Demontower in Night In The Woods.

Thanks for sending it my way!

  • Black Mirror's Bandersnatch springs to mind (itself also a fictional game), which includes an easter egg of a game called Nohzdyve (although it doesn't appear to plausibly be horror as such). Additionally, the in-world company SaitoGemu releases a games called Harlech Shadow IV in the episode "Hated In The Nation," which is plausibly a horror game given the events of "Playtest" earlier in the season.
  • Space Quest IV includes several parody games in a bargain bin found in-game. Of these, BOOM and IT CAME FOR DESSERT are plausible candidates. I suspect there are other game-in-a-game jokes through the canon of adventure games from that era that could be made to fit the theme.
  • Rock Paper Shotgun had a series of articles about a year ago with horror examples that might work.
  • Does Space Paranoids from the original Tron film count if Disney later just made a version you could play online?
  • British limited series Killer Net is about a video game of the same name in its narrative.
  • There's also the virtual reality that gives its name to Chris Carter's Harsh Realm.
  • Mode 6, a VR experience by tech company Sentre, is central to Simon Stålenhag's The Electric State, with a Netflix film adaptation coming next year. While Sentre isn't marketing it as a horror game, its societal consequences are certainly horrifying. (Quite a lot of "VR so scary" floating around, it's almost like Ready Player One was terribly derivative...)
  • I assume you already have eXistenZ in the list, but don't forget the final-act reveal that transCendenZ is also a game.
  • Much as I'm loathe to boost anything to do with Orson Scott Card, The Mind Game from Ender's Game could arguably work in a pinch.

This is a GOOD list, thank you! I did have Bandersnatch and eXistenZ on my list, but this gives me a lot more stuff to dive into.

The hardest part of this idea is finding enough titles that have imagery to pull from, so it’s easier to make drawings based on them. It’s a more difficult art project than I thought going into it. 😅 But I really appreciate you brainstorming and giving me a lot of options!
