"complex system is damaged, but still operating" is a long-term fascination for me

The way Twitter is degrading is remarkable, and for someone who's been using it heavily for years to communicate with friends, kind of disturbing. Features are dropping in and out. This whole evening, the ability to load replies to tweets on my timeline has been flickering on and off, and it might have been off for hours, now. It changes depending on what part of the site you're on, what account you're using, what you're trying to do, and moment by moment.

You get a sense of the tools you use. It feels like it's injured, falling over. It feels like a car that's started making a noise or smell that indicates it's still running but something unsurvivable has happened, and it won't last long. One of the pistons has knocked a hole in the engine block. It's out of balance, bucking, burning. Clicking a tweet causes a spinner to flicker in and out for ten seconds where the replies should be, before settling.

Feels like the end of a world. Maybe it'll be better in the morning. Maybe it'll be gone. I got my own archives out but my manual archiving jobs aren't finished.

A corollary to the preceding point is that complex systems run as broken systems. The system continues to function because it contains so many redundancies and because people can make it function, despite the presence of many flaws. After accident reviews nearly always note that the system has a history of prior ‘proto-accidents’ that nearly generated catastrophe. Arguments that these degraded conditions should have been recognized before the overt accident are usually predicated on naïve notions of system performance. System operations are dynamic, with components (organizational, human, technical) failing and being replaced continuously.

It's just, twitter was always broken? Missing notifications, missing replies. Tweets that couldn't be liked. Popular tweets just vanishing and reappearing.

I'd say the difference now is that we're looking for it, but really, twitter went from midly jank to extremely jank in the space of a week

this feels like one of those things that, to me, will be like a loss nearly equal in magnitude to losing a friend or loved one.

there are "alternatives" but the thing itself the way it was is irreplaceable. and it's never going to come back the way it was. and communities will be split once more and just by the time they've recovered it just happens again

you might think "wow tit this is a lil dramatic isn't it" but as someone whose entire online presence is twitter, along with ALL my friends being there, it just hurts, a lot

It really was its own zeitgeist, wasn't it? It's so weird that it was also rather unique in its format and never successfully imitated, but people made it what it was, for better and worse. It was so fun making a variety of friends on there, and thankfully quite a few of them I was able to meet IRL.

I don't think it's overly dramatic at all, tbqh;

It's so depressing to see communities scattered like this over and over, from having one large collective place with really good discoverability to ... hundreds or thousands of smaller fragmented instances a la mastodon where if you're lucky you can reconnect with parts of those communities; or, worse still, fragmented instances a la people's discord servers, where they effectively just disappear.

And, yeah... yeah... as soon as things start to feel like they've stabilised again -- or at least, just stopped actively collapsing -- another service decides they're going to shut down, or gets bought out and everything gets tipped over again, or they decide they're going to do crypto bullshit, or...

I'm so tired of it all. Hoping like hell that cohost has the staying power, but only time will tell.

agreed. I am sort of enjoying the dumpster fire but also I'm an android and part of my brain is twitter, so if it's gone (actually, or substantially diminished) I just lose a part of myself irrevocably

Twitter is rapidly becoming the “dying mall” of social networking sites. Anchors are pulling out, the fountains have been shut off, the plants are withering and brown, and all but one escalator (going down) is blocked off with an “Out of Order” sign.

I'm anxious and a little teary. I've retreated to watch from a safe distance, but I don't know what any of this means. I wish I did.
