The sun smiles at you with eternal malice


Today I learned from this video that game programmer Keizo Ohta was aware of the acceleration glitch caused by side-attacking into the edge of a half pipe. And even though it clobbered the staff ghost time, decided to leave the glitch in the game because it was fun.

Anyone familiar with some speedrun stuff in this game knows that light machines basically can fly all over the game with insane air control and break it entirely.
This video also contains a lot of casual-friendly information, like how the accel/speed meter works, and in relation to ship weight.

Aside from all the amazing tech you can do in the game, it's also still just really fun to play. The buttery smooth 60fps stands out from the choppy framerates that tended to be common at the time, especially on the N64 itself, especially looking back now.
