  • 2D or 3D: Kinda sorta 3D if you squint
  • Primary Perspective: Any will do
  • Real-time or Turn-based: It varies
  • Alive or Dead: Deader than Disco
  • Back of the Box Blurb: Journey to a time before polygons, where everything was Ballz.

Do you know of any other games in this genre, or can think of a better name for it? Please let me know by commenting on this post!

Ecstatica is a pretty fun game! I own a CD copy of it because I love the ellipsoid look so much, but I never managed to get very far since it's brutally hard. I've heard the sequel is better, but it was hard to find when I last looked for it. It's also supposedly harder to run by virtue of being an early Win 95 game.

Knowing there was a third game in development makes me wish some indie game studio would borrow the ellipsoid/ball look a lot of 90s games had, since it adds a lot charm to the visuals.

I haven't played it (yet), but I like the look on screenshots and in videos. Urban Decay sounded pretty cool in previews (and in fact, I only stumbled upon Ecstatica by trying to find out what that elipsoid game I remembered from some game magazine was, which turned out to be Urban Decay), I wish they'd finished that..

Both Ecstatica 1 and 2 are easy to find on abandonware sites ;)
