Interestingly it seems to have been a bit more of a thing on the early PS2 days, cuz these three examples came to mind with this post. I've never played them so I dunno how they fare (tho I haven't heard great things about Dragon Rage... unexpected considering how 3DO's PS2 offerings tended to fare. lol), but then again I haven't played the ones you mentioned, so there's that too.

...hell, now that I'm remembering there's also the Drakengard games, so it very much did happen quite a bit.

Yeah, I was shocked by how big this "genre" was when doing research into it! Sadly, a lot of PS2 games don't have great screenshots (or any at all) on MobyGames, which is the biggest limiting factor when typing one of these up.

Notable Features:

  • Vibes or Mechanics: A little from Column A, a little from Column B
  • Text or Graphics: Graphics to the Max!
  • 2D or 3D: Almost exclusively 3D
  • Primary Perspective: Top-down
  • Real-time or Turn-based: Real-time
  • Alive or Dead: Deader than Disco
  • Back of the Box Blurb: The toppest of top-down shooter.

I wouldn't normally write a big summary for a genre I made up off the top of my head, but I admit the more I thought about this one, the more weight it had. It's also a style of game I wish would return, so here's a completely fabricated genre history to go with it:

This game has some of the most charming vector graphics I've seen in recent memory! Definitely a style that has aged well, as I swore these were from a modern indie game for a split second.
