rocks and water, 5/13/24:

WATER.

So, we've been having severe rainfall nearly every week for the past 3-ish weeks. This has resulted in costly floods ripping though infrastructure and causing the usual damage.

This location is rarely seen this serene, as I found out later that night.

In 1923, some guys though it would be a good idea to create a dam to supply our town with a reliable water source. As far as I can tell, not a single person in the past 101 years thought it was a good idea to keep consistent maintenance on a 940ft/286.5m dam. Basically, the thing is full of 100-year-old trees now, all of which have become the dam.

It's roughly a 35ft/11m drop from the start of the spillway to the end.

For 100 years, the spillway has slowly been eroding the landscape, creating a large chasm which produces a string of large temporary waterfalls.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Dam Safety Program did a routine inspection on the dam, declared it was unsatisfactory, and the city has since done minimal work to fit it.

Water under moonlight.

I arrived a little later than expected, I had originally planned to use my polarizer as a makeshift ND, but it had already gotten too dark.

The moon! and a bunch of satellites.

Some nice dream-like atmosphere to capture.

This is probably one of the more dangerous photo shoots I've done. Walking around cliffs in the dark, walking thought high current water, slippery rocks, and a dam which has the potential to collapse according to the State of Texas.

Probably still not as dangerous as driving home past midnight without a phone.

Zooming out.

I haven't done sky watching for at least 6 years, which is depressing considering I now live in a place with good skies. There was concerning amount of satellites, much more than I remember 6 years ago. Nearly every other photo had one in it.

I use Starlink to make these post, the alternatives are cost prohibitive or don't exist yet. I can definitely see the reasons to be against it, but I'm a total hypocrite.

There were a lot of fireflies, this is the only image that caught them.

A final relaxing shot.

Anyway, I made my way back to my car and quickly found out the area closes at sundown. Two police cars we're eagerly waiting for me and, given my history of pointless police encounters, I was prepared for the worst.

Turned out they had waited a full hour for me to show up instead of, y'know, looking for me. Great job! Oh yeah, they also told me they were ready to tow the car instead of searching for the owner, again, great job guys! At least I wasn't nearly tasered like last time. If I was injured or missing, guess I'm not worth it according to the cops!

Welp, successful night I guess?

Jesus christ wtf is with your luck and cops???? I guess this is why parking away is the strat in future. or something.

love the photos!! having multiple reasons to use long exposure is great and makes for super neat pics!!! (and all it took was climbing cliffs at night)

and now I wonder if I should try night b/w like that - it certainly reduces the weirdness of colors at night.

I had it coming to me the time I was almost tasered. We were transporting goats from North Texas and had to stay overnight outside Arlington. I was chosen to check up on the goats in a sketchy parking lot, before I knew it two cops with lights and a searchlight pulled up, jumped out, and immediately told me to freeze.

Being completely shocked at the situation and too nervous to even process what was happening, I did basically everything to ensure it more suspicious. It was incredibly frustrating, my brother kept calling me making sure I hadn't been mugged, the cops wouldn't let me answer, even on speaker. I had to stand there like a deer in the headlights (literally) being interrogated for about 15 minutes until they realized I was telling the truth.

Second time I was parallel parking in my small town when a cop walked across a busy street to question me about what I was doing IN FRONT OF CITY HALL WHERE PEOPLE PARK ALL THE TIME TO PAY BILLS. It was an extremely stupid situation, my registration was out of date, I didn't have a license with me, I didn't even have insurance on the car, and the cop didn't care about any of that, he just decided for bother me for a few minutes because my parking was too suspicious. Anyway, that's my current history with police, haven't even been pulled over yet.

Now that the vent is over, I came up with the idea shooting b&w on the fly. I realized, as you said, the colors were just wonky and stole @atomicthumbs style for a night.

Now for coming back in the future, they set up a security camera and motion sensor to guarantee I'll be having a talk with someone within 30 minutes. It's really a shame, it's a beautiful place at night. I guess their just paranoid about meth heads or something.
