Cube 2: Sauerbraten

2004-era arena indie arena shooter

My childhood was a bit Mac OS X 10.6.8-y to have included many video games that weren't on a Flash portal (beyond the ones installed on my local library's computers, I still had the privilege of getting food poisoning as Nancy Drew), but there were still some games I could play, and Cube 2: Sauerbraten was one of 'em. I'm back in the situation of not having access to a computer with a dedicated GPU though, so I'm also back to Sauer, and back to instagib capture the flag rugby. Bunnyhopping around is just as fun as it ever has been, and the servers are still just as populated as they were a decade ago (or in other words, there's usually around 10-20 people online). I still haven't messed with mapping in it much, but it's very neat that new maps are still being made frequently, in large part due to the fact that multiplayer in-game map editing is possible.

Chop Suey

Storybook/point and click adventure

On @dog's recommendation, I gave Chop Suey a shot via scummvm. It was a charming little experience! The often bizarre sights and sounds it offered were fun to click around within. If you're even remotely interested in trying it out, the game is super short and readily available on Archive.org! (Also interesting: the Santaland Diaries guy narrated it)

Sludge Life

Open world exploration/graffiti game

I really enjoy when a game lets me explore a little open world and see all the weird things that happen in it. Sludge Life definitely satisfies that, with plenty of unique folks to talk to and places to explore, filling out a pretty cohesive map. I wasn't a huge fan of how many thin beams the game asks you to mantle onto, but that's in large part due to my computer not being able to keep the game responsive enough to consistently stop myself from running right of the other side of 'em, haha. Thankfully this stopped being as much of an issue once I got the handheld teleporter, which allows you to retry jumps as many times as needed without needing to climb back up to wherever you fell from.

F.E.A.R.

Slow motion singleplayer FPS w/ horror elements and neat visuals

Continuing my early 2000s FPS playing, on @JoeWintergreen's recommendation I picked up a copy of F.E.A.R on Gog. Movement feels so slow coming off UT99 and Sauerbraten, but the enemy behavior is super cool (see the previously linked post for some examples). As a result, restarting from a checkpoint is actually fun for me in this game, simply because of how the enemies react to different approaches.

Unreal Tournament (1999)

More arena shooter action

It's rather tragic that Epic has removed every Unreal Tournament game from sale. The singleplayer modes this offers are still tons of fun, with the AI behavior feeling incredibly lifelike at higher difficulties, and stalemates feeling so much less common than in...

Unreal Tournament 2004

Cube 2's direct competition

Huh. I'm sure this is fun with other players, but unlike UT99, something about the singleplayer tournament here just did not work for me. So many games went into overtime, and I frequently felt like I was the only player on my team. (Which, I guess technically was, but, like, you know what I mean) The flak cannon and shock rifle are still very very cool though, so yeah, I kept having fun on a moment-to-moment basis.

Arkham Horror LCG: The Forgotten Age

Coop/solo card game that feels like an RPG

I wrote about this one here, but in short, it was easily one of the coolest solo board game experiences I've had.
