I'm... a very literal person. Poetry is often my nemesis, because reading between the line or reading things that are descriptive or atmospheric really don't interest me. My parents always liked my poetry as a kid (when we had to do them for assignments), which always was a bit frustrating to me that, seemingly, this thing I disliked I was also apparently good at.
This said, there are two poems that stick with me:
But You Didn't by Merrill Glass
Remember the time you lent me your car and I dented it?
I thought you'd kill me...
But you didn't.
Remember the time I forgot to tell you the dance was
formal, and you came in jeans?
I thought you'd hate me...
But you didn't.
Remember the times I'd flirt with
other boys just to make you jealous, and
you were?
I thought you'd drop me...
But you didn't.
There were plenty of things you did to put up with me,
to keep me happy, to love me, and there are
so many things I wanted to tell
you when you returned from
Vietnam...
But you didn't.
Cause I Ain't Got a Pencil By Joshua T. Dickerson
I woke myself up
Because we ain't got an alarm clock
Dug in the dirty clothes basket,
Cause ain't nobody washed my uniform
Brushed my hair and teeth in the dark,
Cause the lights ain't on
Even got my baby sister ready,
Cause my mama wasn't home.
Got us both to school on time,
To eat us a good breakfast.
Then when I got to class the teacher fussed
Cause I ain't got no pencil.
