I am trying to describe the robin Claire that made itself known recently and I have come to the realization that I do not know how to describe birds in a way that I can describe an OC very well.

Oh sure they have a beak and the typical colors of a male American robin and my current hairstyle, but...is it hair? Feathers? And do they have hands like bird feet or fwingers, or either depending.

Don't get my started on bits

Bird furries, halp

You've got the basics actually!

It doesn't usually come up for me whether the "hair" is feathers or actually hair, whenever I get art mine is interpreted as feathers and it looks good.

Fwingers are cute but clawed hands are conventional and flexible.

Cloaca. (But if you want mammal holes and poles that's fine too)

for real though basically what Lapis said, yeah

there are different types of feathers you could repurpose as hair if you kinda want that route but don't want big ol' plumes sticking up. Downfeathers are short, puffy and soft, bristles are long and stiff (spiky hair?) and filoplumes are very hair-like with a puff on the end (but you can exaggerate or downplay as needed) -- all of which is to say, basically whatever look you want, you can probably feather it, if you want (but also you can just choose to not!)

I mean, feathers are immensely adaptive, just look at these creatures: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard-winged_nightjar

As for wings, I'm a fan of fwingers but you can be a little flexible here if you want - in my mind, at least, fwingers are my preferred shape but if a piece calls for wings-with-claw-hands, I can run with it as long as there's like some kinda wing-like features there.

Kinda unrelated, but I've got this hoodie with wings instead of arms and it's really cool to wear and back when I still went to cons, it was cool to like, do wing-y gestures with it, so it feels like a natural fit.

(if you just kinda do some typical "you*/" poses or gestures but kinda mentally map wings and primary feathers to where your arms are, what feels more natural?)
