Great news!! Have you heard? They're making a new version of Katamari this year!! Confusingly it's named the same as the original game, but they've updated it to modern design standards.
Now, "rolling" is only one of many things you'll do in the new, procedurally-generated open world of Katamari. Play as the Prince of All Cosmos (Cosmo for short) as you run, jump, and shoot your way around the landscape! But don't worry, rolling fans, at any time you can press the "Roll" button (R3) and summon your Katamari to help you defeat the evil Clutterers. Generated arenas of Clutter populate the land and you can triumph there to earn points to upgrade your Katamari, weapons, companion character, home base, or CosmoCrawler military assault vehicle.
You can convert points to stardust, or you can buy stardust directly in the online store. Stardust can be used to unlock new skins for Cosmo, your Katamari, or the CosmoCrawler. But skins can also be made from Materials you gather from defeated enemies or Substances you achieve by rolling up certain Clutter. (Rolling Clutter no longer grows your Katamari, there's an upgrade research tree where you can use your gathered Knowledge and Wisdom currencies to upgrade its stats. Also Materials can be used to Craft new Gear but Substances are only used for skins). Confused? Don't worry! The game has a seven-hour-long tutorial where all the beloved NPCs from the previous games like King and Boy and Rainbow, plus Captain America and Black Panther, explain every mechanic to you in detail. Just check your quest log to see what you should do next in the wild world of Damacy (the planet you're on is called Damacy now, there's a bunch of lore that you can unlock by doing Story Missions to learn about how the Clutter invaded Damacy and threaten the fabric of the Rainbow, but honestly I mostly played the Rolling, Combat, and Survival missions)
