Shortly after the turn of the millennium, scientists around the world began to raise the alarm, warning that a planetary alignment in the year 2000 had caused strange new mutations in the world's youth population.
At first, their concerns were dismissed; tests showed the mutations were dormant and harmless. Years passed without incident. But then, in the early 2010s, as the first 'millennium babies' started to enter adolescence, everything changed.
Imbued with enhanced strength, speed and intelligence, and manifesting strange psychic powers, the emergence of ABNORMAL SPECIES TEENAGERS caused mass panic.
Rebellious and wild, the teens shunned parental guidance and the boons of the state. Realising the potential of their immense power, and adopting the maxim of Rabelais — “nature knows neither servant nor master” — they gathered to depose the establishment. Conventional weapons proved useless.
Facing mounting pressure to quell the crisis, LIBRA took drastic action. Seizing global power through its paramilitary wing, TERMINAL BRUMAIRE, the era of liberal democracy was brought to a close by the very forces formed to safeguard it. The first act of the new dictators was to introduce sweeping legislation, designed to channel the mutant teens’ destructive energies into mutual annihilation.
Resurrecting one of the most brutal sports of the Barbaric Age, a system of global deathmatches was formalised under the banner of the NEW MILLENNIUM CARCERAL TENNIS SYSTEM.
