listening to Trashfuture as an american is hilarious because british politics are like 98% legible through a US lens but then they'll just casually drop some insane shit like The Bonfire of the Quangos and suddenly it sounds like one of the really really late dune novels you didn't read

remember that time uk twitter freaked out because a guy in parliament touched the enchanted mace on the pedestal and the rest of us found out that parliament has an enchanted mace on a pedestal

yeah but there's the added misfortune that US politics can still make your life worse even if you don't live here. I feel like that's gotta change the flavor of it somewhat

in reply to @vogon's post:

it's so funny, especially the thing where we obviously started the tradition to nod toward the way the UK Houses of Parliament worked but as revolutionaries could not acknowledge that we had stolen the bit from them, so instead we decided to make our mace look like a set of fasces, not knowing that in about 100 years that would turn out to have been a poor choice of symbol

also I can't find any reference to what the original mace looked like before the british burned it in 1814 but I'm going to assume it also looked like fasces for the purposes of this post

Really if Enlightenment thinkers hadn't rationalized it as "sticks together are strong! The Romans were so smart" maybe it would have been obvious that they're just sticks to hit people with, lots of sticks means you can hit more people, it's literally the state's monopoly on violence in physical form. Of course that was gonna lead to something like fascism eventually lol
