As someone else who doesn't like the show, here are some thoughts that have crossed my mind while watching it, mostly boiling down to the show somehow not ever having anything to say.

  • Whereas "a Star Trek comedy" has the latitude to scathingly pick apart the imperialism, racism, sexism, and other problems of the franchise, they instead want to tell you how great all that is.
  • A lot of episodes do feel at least partly "generated," as if they went to the Memory Alpha wiki, clicked "Random Page" a bunch of times, and the results became the outline.
  • Likewise, the humor often feels like they appropriate jokes that fans have told for decades.

I don't know if any of that overlaps with your assessment, but maybe it'll help tease that out.

Idk for me, I'm just...not laughing most of the time? And everyone is always smirking like a dreamworks poster.

The showrunner is the guy who ran the really funny TNG season 8 twitter, joke being "A plot very serious and dangerous, B plot very mundane/silly". But I don't know if intentionally doing that is good. It's also quick-cut and condensed: you are only getting 5 hours a season, vs well 26 for a berman st

None of this is enough to make me drop it, I'm still mildly invested.
