Picard is a vintner! we know this! and he makes wine, right? like his family has this huge famous vineyard and they live in a chateau and he and his brother have a big fight in the mud and they definitely are making wine, right?

did you notice nobody ever says if it's, like, good wine or not?

like you'd think if it was GOOD somebody would say something, right? like the admirals would always comment on it when they call him, like 'oh, Jean-Luc, I tried some of the '53, it was just amazing stuff' or 'oh, Picard, do you have any recommendations for pairings for the Merlot? I just can't decide between chicken or beef for the entree' or 'wow, Captain, this is great, it's so nice to share a bottle of your family's best with you after surviving that encounter with a weird floating head in space'

which probably means it's bad, right? that probably means the Picards make some fuckin' grocery store-ass vanity imprint bullshit wine, huh? it's probably terrible and tastes all gasoliney and like MAYBE you can use it as part of a stock or a braise but you probably wouldn't really wanna drink it, huh?

do you think he ever ordered Riker to tell him if his family's wine was good and Riker had to scrunch up his face and tough it out through the really sour notes and the burnt wood flavor and just the thickest tannins so it coats your mouth like vasoline and then swallowed and painfully nodded and went "yessir, it was delicious" and then Riker went down to 10-Forward and he and Guinan got lit up roasting Picard's gas station wine?

anyway this is the sort of thing I think about right after waking up

Geordi also talked shit about Picard's wine in the past, which was referenced in Picard S3 as well!

I think that's kinda part of the cool utopia of star trek's future. Picard can run a generational vineyard that sucks ass and it's not like he has to be wealthy or profitable to keep doing it. He just does because he wants to!

The vineyard is definitely a tax evasion/money laundering front. "We don't care about money in this century and only work for self-improvement, just ask the refugee labor that I use around my ancestral castle..."

In S1 when Picard first meets with Raffi he's carrying a bottle of (presumably his) wine. Raffi asks whether it's some specific year (I forget what) and when Picard answers in the affirmative she agrees to meet with him.

Considering what we later learn about Raffi it may not be the strongest recommendation in the world :-), but at least somebody in S1 seemed to think it was good enough to entice them to meet with somebody they didn't like much.

Picard's associates aren't big wine drinkers, so they're in no place to comment on how the wine is. (My friends and family know that I'm an artist, but they never talk about me as being a good artist.)

The real question I would have is, does he use science to change his grapes? I'm guessing not, since Star Trek has always had an anti-genetic-manipulation stance. 🤔 But is there such a thing as non-GMO crops today, let alone in the future?
