"And you've got your exit strategy?"

"Down off the roof and through the sewer lines, straight shot, no guards."

"Good girl."

Adelaide's face went bright red. "You can't just-!" was as far as she got before she realized the comms had been disabled again. Grumbling to herself, she set her sights on the great stained-glass window that was her mark, and waited. The sky overhead was a bright, beautiful blue, and she could feel the sun baking her dark hair and black arm. A breeze briefly swept the sweat from her brow. She thought about Jester calling her "good girl" again, and decided that she absolutely needed to be thinking about anything else.

She focused on the stained glass. It was beautifully made, although she'd seen better at home. It depicted the king, resplendent upon his throne, flanked by a pair of smaller figures dressed in motley. They stood behind and slightly above the king, hands gesturing towards the crown over the King's head as if showing it off. Looking closer, she saw that they were each robots, camera/faces painted like cyclops clowns, and wearing hats with many drooping points with bells on them.

This place had a very weird aesthetic. She was about to double check her scope settings when something caught her eye. More robots - the King's Guard, painted in emerald green and silver - were converging on Knight's location. She hesitated for a moment, not wanting to break radio silence, when she heard Jester's voice over the comms.

"Empress, scrub the mission and go to ground. Knight, get the hell out of there."

Adelaide scooped up her rifle, and the stained glass window exploded outwards, a million shards raining down on the court below, with Knight in the middle of all of them. She landed heavily, bleeding from her arms where they'd shielded her face, and the guards moved to surround her. Adelaide eyed the distance between her and her mech, still standing victorious on the jousting field. She'd never make it.

Without help.

Quickly, she set up her rifle again as Knight rushed the guard nearest to her exit. She gave it an uppercut that would have shattered teeth in a human, and the robot reeled. Adelaide could see Knight grimacing as her knuckles stared bleeding. Another robot advanced on her from behind, and Adelaide took the shot before it could get close. Knight whirled around to see it falling, nodded, and ran.

Another shot, and a third, and a fourth. Knight's path to her mech was clear, but Adelaide could hear guards attempting to break down the door to the roof behind her. The jam would buy her a second or two, but that was all. She grabbed her rifle, ran past the door as it exploded outwards into splinters, and lept off the roof.
