The Queen picks at a small bowl of ice cream from the comfort of her bed.
Their many quote-unquote helpers have finished their work and left, and she is quote-unquote feeling better now.
"Did the mages have any trouble with their duties?" She asks her knight, between spoonfuls.
"None at all, my lady. All of them were eager to help in any way they could." Says the Knight, standing dutifully by her door several paces away.
She doesn't like to be in the Queen's bedroom, it's... improper. She can stand just inside, that's fine; be right there to open the door if anyone comes by, make it very apparent that she is just standing there and nothing else.
"How kind of them, I'll have to send out thank-you letters." The Queen says, and the two are silent for a moment.
"My knight?" She asks, and when the Knight meets her eyes there's a hint of concern within them. "I- You know that I- That is to say, we-"
"You mustn't speak of such things, Highness." The Knight says softly. "Not here, not now."
It's not a reprimand, it's a fact. She wishes as much as the Queen does that things were different, but they can't take that risk. Especially not on the heels of having all those wizards doing whatever they pleased. Even if they did all end up sabotaging eachother, which was optimistic, something could have slipped by.
And even if nothing had- they were getting too comfortable. The fucking Fool knew, and she wouldn't shut up about it.
"Right, I'm sorry." The Queen says, and the Knight feels a tug at her heartstrings.
"It's- Don't be." She says. "I'll think of something, just-"
And then a knock comes at Her Majesty's bedroom door. She hastily opens it, and grimaces.
"Oh! Pray tell, do I interrupt something?" Asks the Fool.
"Only Her Majesty's dessert." The Knight grumbles. "My lady?"
"Oh, do let her in! I've been bored all week, I would love the company." Says the Queen, and the Knight reluctantly steps aside to let her enter.
"Oh, Your Majesty!" The Fool cries, rushing to the Queen's side and holding her. "How I missed your laughter these long days!"
The Knight tenses, almost imperceptibly. It's fine. Whatever. Who cares what the Fool does, that she glances back at her smugly as the Queen giggles in her arms.
"Really? You did?" Her Majesty asks. "You hear it often enough, do you not?"
She surely does, but that's not enough, she has to flaunt it. Cunt.
"Oh, never, I could never hear enough of my lady's wonderful laugh." Says the Fool, letting go of the Queen and lounging next to her in the bed. "Fair knight, was there something you wanted, lurking over there?"
"Yes, come and join us!" The Queen says gleefully before the Knight can respond, and the Fool's face falls at the suggestion.
"I am guarding the door. What kind of knight fools around in the Queen's bed- don't say it." Snaps the Knight.
The Fool opens her mouth to make the obvious quip, then closes it, eyes turning upward as she tries to think up another. A sly grin crosses her face, and she slowly leans into the Queen's ear.
"Did she tell you that it doesn't count if she only gets a little bit in?" She asks, her voice salacious and hushed. "Because I've known girls who fell for that one."
"Will you get out of here?!" The Knight whines, over her lady's giggling.
