i think the reason game engine discourse has been annoying me, as someone who uses a big proprietary game engine, is that i keep seeing people imply that using a big engine makes you uhhh.... worse at game design or at least worse at realization of your game designs or something
As someone who has released a game where literally every byte of was generated from tooling I personally built from scratch, from custom sprite and level editors down to my own assembler, and who has also made games with Construct, Klik & Play, Game Maker, RPG Maker, Adventure Game Studio, Ren'Py, Inform, and many other game-making tools and engines: Sylvie is exactly right here.
