Trying to figure out if there're any easy-to-produce (i.e. no exotic components like vanadium or what-have-you) iron alloys that could be made in a carbon-lacking environment like the Moon, but my research is turning up short. Anyone know anything that could help?
I am no metallurgist, but this old military paper explores a number of alloys of iron, nickel, manganese, and aluminum, with just a smidge of carbon in some of them. nothing too exotic there, although I have no idea what metal abundances are like on the Moon. https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/trecms/pdf/AD1165627.pdf ~Alyx
Oh hmm, definitely seems promising! In terms of metal abundances, iron and aluminum are relatively abundant, nickel tends to be found naturally mixed with iron, and manganese is (supposedly) present in non-trace quantities, though the exact abundance isn't something I know offhand.
