I think it bears repeating that unfollowing people is not bad. I really really hate it when people develop expectations of obligatory following, or follow-back, especially on sites with no mute button like Cohost or Tumblr.

Being able to control what you see on your social media feed, for any reason, with no required justification, is like most basic level of online boundary-setting for mental health, and when you tamper with that, bad things will follow.

I think it's a very important thing to get out of that combination people-pleasing and self-aggrandizing mindset that you should be out there to please everyone.

That it's not a failing on your part if you aren't pleasing everyone, or if what you do turns out not to be for everyone.

It's good to get out of your own head and take a look now and again like that. Makes you all the more grateful for the people who do stick around, and appreciative of the folks who didn't.

You’re right that unfollowing people is not bad, but you’re wrong about cohost not having a mute button (though it’s called “silence”).

I had someone who followed me for a few months unfollow me because a post I made made them uncomfortable and they just left a respectful comment saying that was their reason and I replied "oh, I'm sorry if I caused you any hurt, have a good one." And that was the end of the interaction.
