Title: 四ツ谷くんとはじめくん Yotsuya-kun & Hajime-kun
Creator: 花束葬式 Hanataba Soushiki
Books: 2 volumes, Aug '22 - Jun '23, Fuz Comics, Houbunsha
This is a spin-off of Hime-chan wa Omoi Onna, set afterward. Just as Hajime appeared in Himeno's series as her friend and confidante, Himeno appears in this series in a similar role.
Hajime is a gay man in the 2nd year of university. Yotsuya is a bi man who had been dating Hajime since they were in high school, but they had a bad break up in the 1st year of university after Hajime found out that Yotsuya had 4 sex friends. This series is about how they feel about each other now and whether they might be able to get back together.
I read this as a result of enjoying Hime-chan wa Omoi Onna and the creator's approach to the characters in that. So having chosen to read a BL series as a result of liking a GL story about a different coupling, I don't think I'm exactly the ideal audience for this. It's the kind of series where the dynamic of the coupling is really the main thing it's offering, so the crux of fully enjoying it is whether the reader is into that dynamic, and it's honestly a rather niche one. Both Hajime and Yotsuya have personalities that are kind of a drag, in different ways. But I can root for characters like that to find a way to be happier rather than hurt each other more, and presumably Hanataba Soushiki believed that there were readers who would care, which I think is a reflection of the ethos that makes me interested in their work and if they announced another serialization I'd definitely check it out.
