If a book is a translation, I think it's a good sign if the translator credit is easily noticeable. Title page at least, but preferably the cover. Especially for novels, but comics too.

At the start of chapter 3 of Mejirobana no Saku, published in English as A White Rose in Bloom, a teacher scolds a class of girls for chatting noisily.
The teacher refers to 2 species of Japanese birds in a way that assumes familiarity, and uses an idiomatic expression. The irony here is that this story is set in an English speaking country. So I was expecting that a localization would get creative and change what was spoken about in order to fulfill the intent of the scene.
Nope, it just translates it badly, including rendering the idiom literally as "making the flowers bloom." Huh.
