I didn't have any specific expectations when booting this up, and I only vaguely remember .hack// (and never watched much of it) but man this game captures a certain early 2000's PS2 anime jank in a fairly charming way. I've only played an hour in or so, so I'm sure my opinion will change, but for now I kind of like the format of the game.
Mostly I actually find the conceit of playing an MMO kind of charming since you regularly log out to your desktop and check emails and forums, and people you meet have profile cards that are all very reminiscent of old forum signatures/profiles.
Though at least in the beginning it really loves throwing in a lot of very long cutscenes, to the point where you should just start the game and expect to sit down for a 20 minute anime.
