once you're above 16 int but below like 11 wis you should be able to roll a critical success on a 17 or higher as long as it's far outside your skillset, having "read it on Wikipedia somewhere once I guess" but you get disadvantage on all following rolls related to the topic until a short rest

My partner was just recently saying it's weird how in us schools, you're expected to test as well in subjects you don't care at all about as ones you do. Like most stuff you interact with as an adult will be outside of your interests, and so knowing even 70% of how everything around you works would make you much smarter than the average person
