Publishers want every indie to make a meteoric viral forever game and no matter what you're pitching if you don't have some kind of 'retention plan' they absolutely hate it. Weird and maddening because what is the difference between playing a $20 game for 10 hours and playing it for 400 hours! Why is the beast so hungry that it can't be satisfied just with money, it needs to consume time as well? I know the answer unfortunately, but it is surprising how the "stylish 20-person team game with a modest budget" is one of the rarest game types and one publishers seem to get most skittish around. It's either giving someone in a basement half the salary of a full-time employee at an AAA studio or a budget that starts at $10 million. No in-between.
