I'm having thoughts about art because of a piece I was working on.
I need to get it out of my head and might as well make a post about it.

Making art, is a series of choices. A series of choices which, one way or another lead you to a finished 'product'. Though I hate calling it a product given the content/clout driven ecosystem the internet is.

Its choices from the top down.
What the subject will be. What medium you will capture the subject in. How you will use that medium.

But I think to me, the second hardest choice you can make is to scrap something and start over. I think, in every medium, choosing to start over can be one of the choices that can be met with the most resistance. This is your baby, you can make it work can't you? All that work can't go to waste.
But when you start over, you don't start from scratch. You know what wont work. You have tangible evidence of it (if you haven't gotten rid of the previous attempt). You are starting from knowing what doesn't work. And knowing that does soften the blow of starting again.

But fucking god if continuing to work on a piece that isn't working isn't harder.
Spending hours starting over and not knowing if you are able to complete a piece how you want it. Do you abandon it? I know I wanted to.
Wanting to leave it alone is a natural response, sometimes when you feel your skill isn't quite there. When its a medium you are uncomfortable with. When you simply cant get it to look right.
The easy choice is to just leave it. Go do something else and forget this. Go do something you know you can do.
But the harder choice is to keep working on it. Cause, you can do this if you try just a little bit harder. Move a few things around. You started all of this, there has to be something you saw in this. You just need a bit to find it.

I say this as someone who nearly decided to abandon their stupid self imposed challenge. The stupid lil daily fighting game character drawings. Only on the second picture. Admittedly I had the whole rest of the day to actually get it done. But deep down I knew if I didn't get it, I would have abandoned it.

Anyway look forward to the next picture.
