I saw a random discussion about self-checkouts on twitter but i didn't want to engage with on twitter bc i hate it there

anyways

From the standpoint of someone who is introverted: I like self-checkouts! they're convenient for when i only have a few things to buy and they make checking out of the store very nice and fast.

But from the standpoint of someone who used to work at a grocery store: I hate em. They constantly require someone to babysit them. Usually one employee running around trying to be at every self-check out at once and every single little thing you do at a self-checkout will prompt having staff come over because they don't want people to shoplift.

I dunno, if we lived in a better world where people actually hired and payed more cashiers well, we wouldn't have the issue of having one person having to deal with buggy ass machines and disgruntled old people trying to check out a huge cart of like 50 items thru self-checkout.

Self-Checkouts are one of those things that put a band-aid on some mangled limbs.

Like grocery stores (mainly big ones) always have like 50 lanes available to use, but only 2-3 of them open at any given time, for reasons that continue to elude me. Would be fast and quick if they utilized them all at once but nah. Decoration ass lanes.

I used to work for a big retailer and it drove me insane because we'd have two open lanes and one person on self-checkot duty even though we had at least 10 other lanes not being used. it's 100% because they don't want to hire, and therefore, pay, other people but then they blame the cashiers for not checking ppl out on time or fast enough. An ouroboros of inconvenience 😩
