discussion of "games with worse graphics" always reminds me of a time when a friend of mine was talking about how they wished there were more games with "bad" graphics and so i took the opportunity to gather up a bunch of games i really liked that all had really janky and unstylized looks, mostly asset flip-looking things, bad default unity shaders, etc., just things that people would generally consider to be conventionally ugly or bad but i thought were still awesome through it all and in some cases genuinely added to the atmosphere, and sent them to the friend only for them to get back to me and say like "oh, no, i meant like (list of a few very well-stylized first-party games where the only part that could really be considered bad was that they were from several generations ago and were thus lower-poly/resolution)"

which immediately made it very clear to me that all discussions of "games with worse graphics" will be really unbalanced/unclear, because without even realizing it, no matter what, everyone's interpretation of what "worse graphics" means will be completely different from everyone else's interpretation.

honestly, it seems like a lot of people likely just mean "not big-studio-grade field scanned PBR textures" when they say "worse graphics". but I think people should be making anything they want to make, and allowing it to not be a 10 to 60 hour masterpiece or chock full of "content" or whatever, if that's not what they actually want to throw out into the world.
