Can I skip the games and go to the latter installments? Or there's a story that is building on from the first game?
From what I've seen (playing these games for the first time myself), the Battle Network games seem to be their own self-contained stories that don't tend to recall much of previous games. (Important characters from previous games never show up again in some cases, plus there's a twist in BN1 that is only really important 2-3 times in the whole series.)
I've seen people recommend playing just BN3 or BN6 if one wants to play only one of the games. There's some things that I feel would get lost by skipping previous games but I think it should be fine?
If you want to go and start with any of the games I heard BN3 is a good way to start. I am just playing through every single game by choice as I want to do something related to them.
