After three open rounds of voting, Sonic Frontiers fell to Genshin Impact to win the third and final round of The Game Awards popular vote contest.
Before that, it fought tooth-and-nail for first place against the eventual winner in the second round, and surpassed titles like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet in the opening act.
Many passionate fans saw Frontiers' nomination as a chance of redemption following the presumed "snub" out of a potential soundtrack or gameplay nomination.
Now, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has yet to successfully win any accolade from The Game Awards, following Sonic Mania's attempt to win in the Best Family Game category in 2017. Paramount's nominated Sonic the Hedgehog 2 also did not capture a win in this year's Best Adaptation category, which was bested by Arcane.
The next opportunity for Frontiers to snag a win will be in January 2023, when the winners of The Steam Awards are expected to be announced.
