i think Black Christmas (1974) predates it in terms of slashers but halloween was definitely the genre codifier
Y'know reading this reminds me that in that first film, he isn't like.. an indiscriminate nonstop murderer. A kid runs flat into him, and he doesn't like immediately murder him even though he could. Could probably and just walk away. He just... Lets him run off. In the later movies he would /absolutely/ kill that kid, just to remind the audience what they're watching.
I never thought about it as a territory thing but looking at it through that lens it makes a lot of sense!
it's so fucked up how good Halloween (1978) is and how so many other films just pale in comparison
