So, as a Doctor Who liker, uh... Yeah, this all seems exactly like you describe, Fandom Tickets. The "I! Am! Talking!" bit is a cool moment from a Standard Doctor Who Speech (albeit, again, a cool one) that... makes no sense with the mechanics they've ascribed to the card? Looking at more of the cards on Gatherer, they're all just Whatever Sound Bite Was Uploaded To Youtube The Most. Colin Baker (Sixth Doctor's) is the only flavor text quote that really seems to be trying to convey the character and it still doesn't gel with his mechanic. Some of the art is really nice and it seems like they're trying to do cool stuff mechanically but the thing that jumps out (and relates back to your post) is that it really, really seems self-contained. You either build a Doctor Who Themed Deck or you don't need or want any of these cards. Which makes them really easy to just drop them and not do Universes Within versions because once they've worn out their welcome as Funko Pops no one is going to care.
I haven't seen the impact of the Dr Who cards - I really hope they're just fun casual cards that wind up being cool to people who like them - but the lotr set has a bunch of cards that I'm going to see every time I watch a legacy/commander game now
it's ___________ Fluxx all over again, but with booster pack pay-til-you-give-up-on-finding-the-card[s]-you-wanted monetization. or yeah, Funko Pop cards. big agree.
The combination of wotc fucking everything in universe and doing this unfixable slop in UB (from a UW perspective) has actually made me stop playing. Sure, I guess maybe my small group might be fine with banning all UB, but I just... Don't want to play with them and that's not really possible.
And everyone who did the two word creature type thing needs to be punished. Come on. There's so many ways that they could have gotten around that. Gallifreyan jumps to mind!
I remember seeing Transformers nerds upset when they did that crossover because they just... Got the art of several characters wrong? In ways with weird lore implications?
