I was discussing this yesterday, that I find it way more approachable for these rabbit-hole things than for like "my thoughts on a videogame - runtime 8 hours". Like no I'm still not interested in 3 hours of "DE:HR is fine".
That said, there's a lot to be said about doing the video in a way that got it released months earlier, preventing $10ks being given to a charlatan.
This trend sucks. At the very least you could split it into 4+ sub-hour videos.
With the HBomberguy video I can understand putting it all out at once given the nature of the content. But IMHO the length also causes the biggest negative of the video.
The philosophical discussion of the problems and harms of plagiarism, and the part where he recommends the work of others, are all in a 40 minute chunk at the end. It basically means people who just coming to the video for drama get a nice "compact" 3 hours of pure drama up front. And then they can check out before the meaningful stuff at the end.
one of my lasting problems with harris barris garris is not at all about his content but that any point you need four hours to make you could probably make even better in fewer hours and a different format. Like, it's just very hard to see this kind of communication as optimal.
