I made a mention of how in cobrin'seil, Dal Raeda is a country the size of Australia with the population density of Germany

I just did the math, that suggests my fantasy magepunk 'standard european country states' place has a population of 1.7 billion people

jesus christ, germany is densely populated

laughs in Dutchland

Someone once complained that California was overcrowded, so I calculated that if the state of California (423,970 km²) had the population density of the Netherlands (522 per km²), then they would have 221.3 million people living there. (Actual population: 39.2 million)

So many US states are such a mix of actually dense areas and then vast areas of basically nothing. In California the San Francisco Bay Area is almost half the size of the Netherlands (the “nine counties” is 18,040 km²) and has a more comparable density (431 per km²). And then the whole state like you say is so spread out, with a population density of 97 per km². All of these things are wild exponential nestings of regions, only on the East coast did the US put the cities close together.
